Fresh Step Unscented Ultra Multi Cat Litter
The online reviews suggested that Fresh Step is the best cat litteravailable, but people complain about the perfume, saying it has achemical odor. I decided to try the Fresh Step Unscented Litter.
We prefer litter that is unscented since cats are sensitive tosmell. The highest rated litter is "Dr Elsey's" since it is low indust, clumps well for scooping and is unscented. The only downside isthat like all clay litter it is not biodegradable or flushable. Goodalternatives are The "Worlds Best Litter" and "Swheat Scoop" which arebiodegradable and flushable.
As always, I am constantly on the lookout for products thatwill improve the lives of my own cats and my clients’ cats. I’ve been anadvocate of high-quality, unscented clumping cat litter for years, but havenever fully believed in using one particular brand. However, after discoveringDr. Elsey’s cat litter, including Cat Attract cat litter, my opinion haschanged. There are, of course, tons of other clay-based clumping litters. These don't get much in the way of expert feedback, and user reviews don't provide a lot of separation between brands. One recommendation that's shared by expert after expert is to bypass the scented varieties and stick with an unscented litter. The fragrance might be appealing to a cat owner, but testing shows it to usually be a turn off to the cat. Even worse, it can mask an unsanitary situation. Dr. Pierson is quite blunt on this: "CLEAN THE DARN BOX! Do not look to litter as a way of controlling odor," she says. Dr. Karen Becker at Healthy Pets adds that many cats are adverse to scents and even odor control additives, so the best way to avoid litter box problems is to pick a litter that doesn't contain these. "This will give your kitty as natural an environment as possible in which to do his business," she says. It’s still too early to fully comment on Precious CatUltra’s ability to control odors, but I can say already that I have noticed noincrease in odor in the litter box area since switching brands from theprevious scented brand I was using. More importantly, not only is there no odorif the boxes are scooped regularly, but there are no invasive perfumes tryingto mask the odor! I had previously triedanother unscented litter because that is what cats prefer and the odor wasunbearable regardless of how clean I kept the boxes. This is not the case with Precious Catlitter. I spend a great deal of my behavioral-consulting time dealing with the nightmare of IE. ‘Inappropriate elimination’ is a fancy term for a cat that is urinating and/or defecating outside of the litter box. Given the fact that *most* of these problems are man-made (illogical litters like pellets being use, dirty litter boxes, non-clumping litters, small or enclosed boxes that are scary or stinky, etc.), I do whatever I can to provide my cats with the most natural and inviting litter available and that happens to be an UNscented clumping litter. So, here’s what you need – an unscented clumping cat litter. It will normally contain bentonite clay granules. These are dust free and absorb all the urine extremely well, which means that the odor is controlled naturally without the need for any scents or anti-ammonia additives. Avoid getting scented litters since they do not treat the odor, they try to mask it. For you it might seem like the odor is not there, but your cat’s sharp nose will easily detect everything and some cats might actually hate the strong perfumes that are mixed in such litters.Unscented litters are preferred by cats because they want to be able to identify some of their own scent in their litter. Perfume, fragrance, or deodorizer is not necessary to prevent litterbox odor and can make a litter undesirable to a cat. If you scoop out the wastes at least twice a day, the litterbox should be odor free.
