y/d® must be fed exclusively to the hyperthyroid cat in order to achieve significant lowering of thyroid hormone levels. Even minute levels of iodine from other sources (table food? treats? pill pockets?) can diminish the effectiveness of the diet.
After starting on e medication, he seems more picky with his dry food choice though he loves his Wellness Core chicken wet food. Have been changing his dry food for the third time now & would like to know whether should I feed him high or low protein food? He has an elevated liver & kidney values since the last blood test on Friday before starting on the medication. Most commercial food contains higher Iodine (fish oil & kelp), phospohrous, sodium selenite, carrageenan and Iodize salt. Is it alright for his condition? Is there any recommendation on the food? Is Wellness, Natural Balance & Evo good enough? In recent years, the couples of important clues have been found to identify the hyperthyroidism in cats. The first thing is that the cat has consumed a big amount of commercial fish flavored cat food, which develops the disease. The second thing is limiting the amount of iodine in the diet of cat that maintains the normal hormone levels of thyroid. According to the several veterinarians’ reviews, the cats became ill because of eating low quality of fish ingredients in the cat foods. Even some food contains chemical that will line the cans at frequent cases. Another clear factor is using some type and portions of fish used to make the cat foods.According to the recent research, veterinarians really don’t know the answers for why the older cats develop the hyperthyroidism. But most of the veterinary endocrinologists believe that too low diets in iodine contribute to this problem. To protect your pet from this problem, it is a good idea to bring iodine free cat food that helps to prevent the root cause of hyperthyroidism. After thorough research, the veterinarians have found the three best possible ways to deal with this problem for cats such as treat the cat with anti-thyroid medications, remove the malfunctioning thyroid gland for cats surgically and also destroy the thyroid with radioactive iodine. However, all the three treatment options have both benefits and drawbacks too.Initially, the veterinarians didn’t identify the lower thyroid hormone levels for a long term with low iodine diets in cats. So, they conduct studies with a small group of scientists and tested what appeared to be normal cats. Based on knowledge, they have found a new prescription diet and used the same approach on hyperthyroid cats successfully. The formula used in this scientists’ prescription diet is iodine free cat food or extremely limited in the iodine content. As per some other company research, feeding a low iodine food can treat the hyperthyroidism in cats. However, this will be a wonderful option for many cat owners in these days. However, the fish ingredients in cat foods can always be higher amount of iodine. But the too little iodine can cause the hypothyroidism for cats. Usually, the iodine contains most of the cat foods, especially in the canned items that could be exceedingly high. Whenever you buy food items for your cats, it is necessary to check the ingredients labeled on a product and ensure whether it is good or bad for your pets. Based on many researches, the commercial cat food always contains various levels of iodine. When limits the intake of cat’s iodine, it will lowers the thyroid hormone levels of cats. What happpened? Why was there such an explosion of hyperthyroidism in cats over the last 30 years? The answer in part may be found in the iodine levels of cat foods. Iodine levels in cat food were found to be very high in the 1980′s corresponding to the time when the first cases of hyperthyroidism were reported. As iodine is a key component in thyroid hormone, the recommendations at that time were to lower iodine levels in the food.
