Finally, it is a common misconception that animals end up in shelters because the animal has a behavioral problem of some kind. In fact, it is usually no fault of the animal that he or she is in the shelter. Most cats in shelters are released (abandoned or dropped off at the shelter) because the owner is no longer able to care for the animal due to hardship, a change in circumstances, or a lack of continued desire to care for the animal.IN EARLY SEPTEMBER 1939, the citizens of London set about killing their pets. During the first four days of World War II, over 400,000 dogs and cats — some 26 percent of London’s pets — were slaughtered, a number six times greater than the number of civilian deaths in the UK from bombing during the entire war. It was a calm and orderly massacre. One animal shelter had a line stretching half a mile long with people waiting to turn their animals over to be euthanized. Crematoriums were overrun with the corpses of beloved dogs and cats; the fact that they could not run at night due to blackout conditions mandating the extinguishing of all manmade light sources so as not to aid German bombers’ navigation, further added to the backlog. Animal welfare societies ran out of chloroform, and shelters ran out of burial grounds. One local sanatorium offered a meadow, where half a million pets’ bodies were interred. We run a cat rescue/shelter and are always in need of caring, responsible people to volunteer. Cleaning is the most important thing we need, and could take 3 hrs. After that you can stay and socialize, play, and help groom. At times we need help with fundraising events, taking beds to the laundry mat, and possibly transporting cats and/or litter & food. Please be committed to the hours you agree to work, and call in advance if you can't make it. We also are a place you can do your volunteer requirements for school and court, as long as you do a good job!In the East-end of London there is a large foreign and semi-foreign population who will not deliberately commission the destruction of their dogs or cats, although they are quite willing to hand their superfluous animals over to a shelter, murmuring, “You will not kill it! “washing their hands in the air and inwardly calling on their consciences to witness that they have done the right thing.
