Desperate, i went to Super Walmart and got Hartz Tick and Flea drops. We usually use Advantage for Cats, but the only place that sells it was the vet and it was Friday evening. I didn't want to have to wait til Monday. I had heard of the Hartz brand and the medication, for the size, was more expensive out of the other products offered, though less expensive than Advantage. The Pro-cision Flo™ applicator (patent pending) easily penetrates the fur for improved application directly to your cat’s skin. She is an indoor/outdoor cat and at age 16 we knew she was going to begin showing signs of being elderly at some point. We discovered she was covered in fleas (never ever had a flea issue before we got the dog) so there was the problem. I purchased some OTC flea drops (not Hartz!) but also picked up Hartz Ultraguard Flea & Tick Spray for Cats to give her immediate relief and planned on applying the drops the next day. After application, within a few minutes she was foaming at the mouth and vomiting. We figured she just licked some of the product. We comforted her and thought all would be well.My 9 year old cat Fred was a perfectly healthy and large cat. He never went outdoors, however our yard began having problems with fleas which soon spread to the basement. As a preventative, I used Hartz flea and tick drops on him for the first time, since they seemed like the best quality for the price. Last night we found him lethargic laying his head in the water bowl, completely infested with fleas. We quickly began to wash him, but he went into shock and passed away in my arms. All of his symptoms pointed to flea anemia, which is usually only lethal to older and sick cats or young kittens. Fred was 9 years old and in the best of health until I used this product. I have no doubt in my mind that it not only was completely ineffective in preventing a flea infestation, but weakened his health enough for the infestation to take his life. I urge everyone to spend the extra money and buy a better product such as Advantage. If you truly love your pets, you will avoid Hartz products at all cost.
