DOG EAR INFECTION MEDICATION - EAR MEDICATION FOR CATS
Black Walnut Hull tincture is a herbal medicine and can easily be found online or at HerbShopConnection.
Medicinal herbs were used in the past to cure different conditions and help with the health and they are usually dried, pulverized and put into capsules nowadays, or made into tincture with apple cider vinegar or alcohol and sold in little glass bottles with a dropper in glass. With this dropper you can splash the tincture into the cat’s ears. To know more about herbal medicine, you get the big book about it, ”The School of Natural Healing” from Christopherwebsites.
You can try and find a Black Walnut tree, the walnuts are edible but the hull is thicker than on ordinary walnuts and also grow into the nut and is not used so much for eating as it tastes less good than the ordinary walnut.
How to make this tincture by yourself:
Find a Black Walnut tree – ask someone or search online where it is. Pick the walnuts when they are green and unripe. Keep vodka at hand in a jar, then either put inside the whole walnuts or cut off the green hull and put it directly into the vodka each as you cut it, freshly cut until the vodka is full of walnuts, then wait for two weeks and strain off the hulls, press out any juice into the vodka. Now you have cheap walnut hull tincture. I think this is how you do and this week I will make some myself for the first time. You can see on youtube a few videos on this. I will buy organic vodka as it might be GMO otherwise, but they say to take the cheapest vodka otherwise. I think in the US they have a gallon of cheap organic vodka somewhere. I will check with David Christopher at the School of Natural Healing and come back.
Once the ears have been cleansed of residue from the mites, you can apply medication. Most of the effective ear mite treatments contain insecticide that contains pyrethrins. The medication will usually be in the form of drops which you will put in the cat's ears, then massage so it gets good coverage. While you can buy over the counter treatments for mites, the medication provided by your veterinarian is generally stronger and may be more effective.
Tresaderm is a prescription medicine FDA approved for veterinary use in dogs and cats. Tresaderm is available as a dermatologic solution in a 15ml dropper bottle for use in the ear(s) or to apply topically to the skin. Each ml of solution contains 40mg thiabendazole, 1mg dexamethasone, and neomycin sulfate equivalent to 3.2mg of neomycin. Prior to use the affected area should be cleaned. Application and use of Tresaderm should be limited to a period of not longer than one week. Do not use in the eyes.Since you have checked the ears, you know where the problem spots are. Use a cotton ball, wet it with an ear solution. It's important to clean out all the gunk before medicating the ear canal. If your cat's ears are filled with ear mites, you can apply some solution directly into the ear canal and massage it for one to two minutes before cleaning. It will soften the dirt and make it easier to clean up.Treatment generally begins with a thorough cleaning of the cat’s ears to remove any wax or debris that may shield the mites from topical medications. “There are many topical, oral, and systemic agents,” Dr. Miller notes, “and most—such as ivermectin—are highly effective. Even one old-time remedy—baby oil—can do the job. A few drops put into an affected ear several times a day for a month or so will usually smother the mites.” Medication is generally applied daily, for several days in a row. Then, you usually wait a week after which the cleansing and medication process is repeated. You may need to do this whole procedure for three or four cycles before ridding the ears completely of mites. Ear mites can actually live outside the ears. While they usually live in the ears, they can also survive in the surrounding fur. An ear mite will spend his whole life in a cat's ear, from hatching, starting its own family, and finally through to its death. You may need to use medication outside of the ear area for this reason.
