Until she mates or is spayed, these will repeat as often as every two or three weeks, causing distress to both the queen and her human companions. During these cycles, Queenie's entire focus will be on escaping the house to mate, or to mate with a male housemate, if you are careless enough to have whole male cats in the same household. She will be single-minded in her need to mate, will loudly vocalize (call), and lurk near doors, just waiting for the chance to meet up with one of the noisy feline Romeos who will cluster near your home, fighting for the privilege of impregnating your queen. Usually, cats are ready to breed when they are on heat. The cycle of heat (4 steps) starts with Oestrus (Estrus) cycle and if cat successfully mates then she becomes pregnant. The cat would be ready to start being on heat right after the delivery of kittens. So this heat cycle could keep on going without any intervals. The biggest season of is the “spring” and “summer”. Cats mate in these seasons because of many factors. Naturally, this season is good for breeding because the kittens could survive in a better way during summer time as compared to winters. This is about the Cat Mate cat doors, the regular Vs the large cat size. Sometimes words just don't give you the information you need. And answers you get from consumers on the Amazon pages can be wrong. Because of that, I bought the wrong one. So Here is a side by side comparison to help you out, so you don't have the same problem. The heat cycle is normally clearly recognized by cat’s owners. The cat’s behavior changes completely and thus it becomes evident that a cat is ready to mate. It is always better to not put a cat for breeding until she is not above 1 year of age. The other measure here is to keep the cat safe from mating during the first ever heat cycle. The cat would not be able to conceive properly in such young age and it is best to let the cat become mature enough. Therefore, the best is to avoid first heat cycle (even the second one, if the breeding is not necessary). QUESTION:

I had a female Siamese come to me about 3-4 weeks ago. She was on call and mated with my male Siamese. I thought she was pregnant as nipples were a little larger and pinker and she’s a little fatter than before. But last night and several times today my male has been mating with her again. Can males mate with pregnant cats or does that mean she wasn’t pregnant from before?

Hi Sandra,

Theoretically, a female cat can remain in heat for up to 21 days. She can mate with more than one male during that period of time and can have a litter of kittens which contains kittens from one male AND kittens from the other male. However, most often, if a female cat mates and is pregnant, she is not going to still be in heat up to 21 days later. Your female would had to have been in heat after conceiving with your male cat if she were to mate with him again. That is highly unlikely.

If the cats mated initially several weeks ago, your new female was likely not pregnant from that first interaction. Females are only receptive to mating when they are in heat. There can be false pregnancies in cats, so you may very well have been seeing the symptoms of pregnancy without her actually being pregnant.

There are also pregnant cats that have miscarriages so she could have been pregnant but lost the kittens.

If she isn't pregnant, I would strongly urge you to have her spayed. She is much more likely to develop mammary cancer or a uterine infection or uterine cancer if she is not spayed. There are also so many kittens and cats in the world that need homes, I personally feel it is a shame to let a cat have kittens.

Best wishes,
Dr. Neely
